چکیده

ii ABSTRACT In certain types of fleet systems, the environmental impacts of fleet operation are, to some extent, a controllable function of vehicle routing and scheduling decisions. However, there has been little prior work that has considered environmental impacts in fleet vehicle routing and scheduling optimization, in particular, where the impacts were assessed systematically utilizing life-cycle impact assessment methodologies such as those described by the Society of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology. In this paper, we present a methodology for the joint optimization of cost, service, and life-cycle environmental consequences in vehicle routing and scheduling, which we develop for a demand-responsive (paratransit or " Dial-a-Ride ") transit system. We demonstrate through simulation that, as a result of our methodology, it is possible to reduce environmental impacts substantially, while increasing operating costs and service delays only slightly.

A Method for Scheduling Integrated Transit Service

In the United States, many transit agencies are considering integrating their demand-responsive service with traditional fixed-route service. In some cases, it may be advantageous to the transit agency or to the passenger to coordinate traditional demand-responsive transit service with fixed -route service. The demand-responsive service connects passengers from their origin to the fixed route s...

Green Transit Scheduler: a Methodology for Jointly Optimizing Cost, Service, and Environ- Mental Performance in Demand-responsive Transit Scheduling

Many types of transportation systems, for example, public transit and commercial freight hauling and package delivery, may be categorized as being fleet operations. The environmental impacts of fleet operations such as these are affected by factors including the initial choice and selection of vehicles (types) comprising the fleet, vehicle age and maintenance, and the modal conditions under whi...

An insertion heuristic for scheduling Mobility Allowance Shuttle Transit (MAST) services

In this paper, we develop an insertion heuristic for scheduling Mobility Allowance Shuttle Transit (MAST) services, an innovative concept that merges the flexibility of Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) systems with the low cost operability of fixed-route bus systems. A MAST system allows buses to deviate from the fixed path so that customers within the service area may be picked up or dropped of...

Insertion Heuristic for Scheduling Mobility Allowance Shuttle Transit (MAST) Services: sensitivity to service area

A Mobility Allowance Shuttle Transit (MAST) system is an innovative concept that merges the flexibility of Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) systems with the low cost operability of fixed-route bus systems. It allows buses to deviate from the fixed path so that customers within the service area may be picked up or dropped off at their desired locations. Such a service already exists in Los Angele...
